Trail Trekkers: Adventures in the Brecon Beacons ⛰️

Journey to Llyn y Fan Fach ⛰️

Hi guys, Li Wei is here, Great to meet you all!  Let me introduce my favourite hiking trail to you all! Llyn y Fan Fach is a picturesque glacial lake located in the Brecon Beacons National Park in Carmarthenshire, Wales. The lake's name translates to "Lake of the Small Beacon Hill" in Welsh. Llyn y Fan Fach is nestled beneath the steep escarpments of the Black Mountain range, making it a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Llyn y Fan Fach is also a starting point for various hiking routes, including a climb to the nearby peaks such as Picws Du and Waun Lefrith, offering spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. The area is known for its stunning scenery, wildlife, and tranquil atmosphere, making it a favourite spot for outdoor activities in Wales.

Getting There 🚙 :

Driving:

For me, I think driving is the most convenient way to reach Llyn y Fan Fach. I drove my mini-cooper from Brecon, headed west on the A40, and then took the A4069 south towards Llangadog. Follow the signs for Llyn y Fan Fach from Llan. There is a small car park at the trailhead. Be prepared for a narrow and winding road leading up to it.

Public Transport From Cardiff or Swansea:

If you don't have a driving license, NO WORRY! You can take a train or bus to Llandeilo or Ammanford. These are the nearest towns with reasonable public transport links. You can catch a train or bus from major cities like Cardiff or Swansea. From Llandeilo or Ammanford, you can take a bus towards Llanddeusant. This is the closest you can get to Llyn y Fan Fach by bus. Note that bus services in rural Wales can be infrequent, so checking the latest timetables is essential.

The Trail

Main Route:

- Distance: Approximately 4 miles round trip

- Duration: 2-3 hours

- Difficulty: Moderate. The path is well-marked but can be steep in sections

Trail Description:

This was my first trail in Wales which is friendly to beginners. From the car park, follow the gravel path that winds up through the valley. The trail ascends gradually alongside a stream, offering picturesque views of the surrounding hills. As you climb higher, the path becomes steeper and rockier. Eventually, you'll reach the lake, surrounded by dramatic cliffs.

Alternative Route:

- Llyn y Fan Fach Loop: Let's challenge yourself! You can extend your hike by continuing to Llyn y Fan Fawr, adding an extra 3-4 miles to your journey. This loop offers more spectacular views and a more challenging hike.

Perfect Photo Spots 📸

Do you know that I have a photographer's dream? In Llyn y Fan Fach, I captured the early morning mists as they danced over the lake and the dramatic sunset hues painting the cliffs in golden light. The snapping pics with your phone or setting up a professional shot, every angle offers a breathtaking view. I love it so muchhhh!
